Background of the Study
Proper nutrition is a critical component of elderly care, as it directly influences physical health, disease management, and overall quality of life. Nutritional guidelines for elderly care emphasize the need for balanced diets rich in essential nutrients to address age-related changes such as reduced metabolism, weakened immunity, and the risk of chronic diseases. Nurses play a vital role in promoting and implementing these guidelines in healthcare settings.
In Nasarawa State, where healthcare facilities often face resource constraints, adherence to nutritional guidelines can significantly improve outcomes for elderly patients. However, challenges such as limited training, insufficient resources, and high patient-to-nurse ratios may affect adherence to these guidelines. Research (e.g., Abubakar et al., 2024) highlights that while nurses recognize the importance of nutrition, their practices are often inconsistent with established guidelines, particularly in resource-limited settings.
Despite the critical role of nutrition in elderly care, there is limited research on the adherence of nurses in Nasarawa State to nutritional guidelines. This study seeks to address this gap and provide insights into how adherence can be improved to enhance patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Elderly patients in Nasarawa State face a high risk of malnutrition, which exacerbates chronic conditions, delays recovery, and reduces quality of life. Nurses, as frontline caregivers, are expected to implement nutritional guidelines to prevent and address malnutrition. However, adherence to these guidelines is often compromised by factors such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and competing priorities in clinical settings.
The lack of empirical data on nurses’ adherence to nutritional guidelines in Nasarawa State limits the development of targeted interventions to address these challenges. Understanding the current state of adherence is essential for improving elderly patient care in the region.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on assessing nurses’ adherence to nutritional guidelines in elderly patient care in selected healthcare facilities in Nasarawa State. It examines influencing factors and potential solutions. Limitations include variability in healthcare facilities’ resources and reliance on self-reported adherence by nurses.
